Dancing in the streets

Our Christmas project in which we took to the streets of Manchester and London with our poster on a large placard.

Our placard read; Thin, Hairless, Nip and Tucked, Airbrushed and White – Why is this all right? Why is this all white? Are you dreaming of a White Christmas?  All in the shape of a christmas tree, and our decorative christmas balls held the faces of celebrities that fit into this image.

With our ghetto blaster and poster we danced outrageously and gave a comical lecture to passers by on the theme. We wanted to make this project as accessible and fun as possible to entice young people to ask us questions. We felt we achieved this as many young teenagers, female and male approached us to ask us what we were doing and why.  This gave us a great opportunity to discuss our concerns about the portrayal of women in the media.

The intention of this project was to provoke a questioning of the images we encounter on a daily basis of mainly white, thin, hair free women.
